BACK
Some historical traces show that people were settling in this region since the neolithic age. The oldest known document, however, dates from the year 1096. In this an abbot named Pedro donates estates, which belonged to the church of S. Julião, to the cathedral Sé Velha of Coimbra.
Figueira da Foz is a local sea side resort in the district of Coimbra and the seat of the county government, situated at the mouth of the river Mondego. It has been a tourist attraction mainly for the Portuguese since the end of the 19th century and became increasingly popular towards the 1930’s. Since the Portuguese spend their summer here there are good road and rail connections.
The beautiful long white sandy beach here has decked walkways, tennis courts, volleyball and other activities. Lined with cafes, restaurants and good Hotels along the front and shops up the back streets.
Figueira da Foz has one of the biggest casinos of the Iberian Peninsula – the Casino Peninsular. With the aim of holding congresses in the last few years, the city has been trying to become an important centre of culture.
