Hiking in the Algarve, Portugal: What to expect

Whether it’s your first time hiking in the Algarve or not, a little knowledge will go a long way when planning your Algarve hiking adventure!

Here is what you need to expect.

Does Portugal Have Good Hiking?

Hiking may not be the first thing that comes to mind when people think of Portugal.

However, this coastal country has many great trails for avid adventurers.

Aside from popular hiking destinations such as Parque Nacional de Peneda-Gerês, there are also other routes and reserves scattered across the country just waiting to be discovered.

Is the Algarve Good for Walking?

In short: yes, it is!

While you might need a car to get to many places in the Algarve, much of it can also be explored on foot.

When was the last time you looked ahead of you and saw nothing but the sea, sky, and open space?

Many of the Algarve hikes offer views of the region’s rocky coast, majestic cliffs and vivid waters that you otherwise can’t see.

And, for all the other parts, you certainly won’t be able to enjoy the scenery as much if you were to speed by it on a car or a tour bus!

Plus, it helps that the weather is nearly always great for hiking.

Why Go Hiking in the Algarve?

The simple answer is because it is the best way to enjoy the region.

Hiking may not be what draws most people to the region, but it’s impossible to see it fully without enjoying one of the many Algarve hikes available.

What’s more, the Algarve’s hiking trails are receiving funding and promotion from local authorities who know how much potential they have to draw visitors in.

Right now, it’s not uncommon to get a beautiful trail all to yourself – but that could soon change.

Even if it does change, there are enough Algarve hikes to go around.

There’s also something for everyone, including a number of lush nature reserves, where you’ll be able to see flora and fauna that are endemic to the region.

Other Algarve hikes will take you through wetlands, golden beaches, and into the forests. While some of these trails might take you a day or two to get to your destination, they will never disappoint.

With that in mind, here are some of the best Algarve hiking routes to savour.

The Best Algarve Hikes

Narrowing down the best Algarve hikes is a challenge – more challenging than any of the hiking trails themselves, in fact.

But, even though most of the hiking trails in the Algarve won’t offer experienced hikers their greatest challenge, they’re unlikely to disappoint.

Hiking in the Algarve is satisfying in a different way to, say, hiking in the mountains.

What it lacks in physical strenuosity, they make up for tenfold in natural beauty and revitalising tranquillity.

1 – The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

The Seven Hanging Valleys trail, also known as the Seven Suspended Valleys, is the most popular hiking route in the Algarve region.

It is largely considered one of the most beautiful hikes – if not the most beautiful – in all of Portugal. It stretches from Praia da Marinha, all the way to Praia do Vale de Centeanes.

In total, the Seven Hanging Valleys hiking trail covers about 6 kilometres of land, offering some truly memorable sights along the way.

The Seven Hanging Valleys hiking route gets its name from the seven suspended valleys you will be passing through throughout this hike. These are wonders of nature by themselves, but there are also plenty of other breathtaking landmarks along the way.

Your reward for completing the trip? The cerulean blue sea that continues as far as the eyes can see.

This hiking trail may not be the best-kept secret in Algarve, but its mystique will not fade even after your second or third visit. No wonder many say it is one of the best hikes Algarve.

2 – Ponta da Piedade

When it comes to sea views, the Algarve is certainly not lacking. However, there’s something about the otherworldly sandstone cliffs and sea arches of Ponta de Piedade.

Shaped by the weather over thousands of years, it’s hard not to find yourself in awe of these giants, which seem to reach up from the crystal blue waters of the sea below.

This view alone makes it worthy of being counted as one of the most beautiful Algarve hikes.

This short coastal trail will pass through popular beaches, which are often crowded. Instead of going where the crowds are, follow the 182 steps from the cliffs right down to the water below.

Not only are there fewer people, but it will also show you an entirely different look at the steep cliffs as well.

3 – Serra de Monchique

Serra de Monchique – or Monchique Mountain – is one of the Algarve’s lesser-visited areas despite its unique and beautiful scenery. Because of this, it can feel like one of the Algarve’s best-kept secrets.

There are many hiking trails to enjoy in the mountainous area around Monchique.

Even though they vary a lot, the trails all offer a quiet ambience that feels a world away from the beaches and resorts that most people associate with the Algarve.

Monchique is the perfect Algarve hiking spot for nature lovers who want to enjoy a different side to the region.

The Monchique region boasts diverse fauna and flora, with many species differing from what can be spotted along the coast.

Here, you’ll also find freshwater waterfalls instead of the vast sea.

If you really want to make the most of your time in Monchique, there are plenty of Monchique hiking tours available.

4 – Ludo

The best Algarve hikes Algarve aren’t always challenging, and Ludo is a perfect example. This trail is inside the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve and will take you across salt flats and even golf courses.

At 4 kilometres in length – though it can be extended to 8 kilometres via alternative routes – Ludo is one of the shortest hiking trails in the Algarve.

However,  few would argue against it being among the best walking routes in the region.

While completing the 4-kilometre route and taking in views of the beach dunes can be plenty of fun, there are other activities you can try in the area.

The Ludo trail is visited by a multitude of bird species annually, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and bird enthusiasts.

If you’d like to spot some of the local wildlife, we recommend joining a Birdwatching Walking Tour.

It will also take you into the area of Quinta do Lago, and who knows? You might even spot some flamingoes spending time in the water!

5 – Rota Vicentina

From one of the shortest routes, we now move to the biggest route in Algarve.

If you want to explore all that Rota Vicentina has to offer, make sure you set aside multiple days for this trip.

The full Rota Vicentina trail stretches across 340 kilometres, passing through Cabo de São Vicente to Santiago do Cacém in Alentejo.

Most people who take on the challenge of the Rota Vicentina camp along the way, adding to the spirit of thrill and adventure.

All of that effort wouldn’t be for nothing, though. Your journey will bring you to secluded beaches, complete with untouched nature and placid waters.

In a region so popular with tourists, something like this will definitely feel like a luxury.

And, if you only feel like a day hike, simply take your pick from any of the 25km sections along the full trail – or choose a few to experience over several different days.

Tips for Hiking the Algarve Coast

Whether you’re doing short walks or going long-distance, you’ll have much more fun hiking in the Algarve if you know you’re doing it safely.

To help you plan for any of the beautiful hikes, here are some top tips to keep in mind.

Walk with a guide where possible

While many of the Algarve hiking trails are easily accessible, you don’t have to go it alone.

Hiring a professional will keep you from getting lost, while also providing insight into the region itself.

From history, plants, rock formations, and local culture, having a guide will make the experience even more enriching because trails have very little public information.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like a recommendation.

Bring a hiking GPS

Whether you’re going alone or with a guide, having a hiking GPS will spare you a lot of trouble. Think of it as an added security measure toward safety and staying on the right path.

Use the right clothing and footwear

It goes without saying that you’ll need to be very comfortable during your hike, especially if hiking during mid-summer or mid-winter.

Avoid wearing too many layers and opt for breathable clothing. We also suggest wearing trousers instead of shorts to protect yourself from thorny plants and insect bites.

You don’t necessarily need good walking shoes, but the shoes you’ll be wearing should be lightweight and, if hiking in the winter, consider something waterproof.

Don’t forget your sunscreen, hat and sunglasses

Any time you’re in nature and exposed to the sun’s UV rays, you must take every precaution to protect yourself. This is especially true in the Algarve, where it’s nearly always sunny!

Choose sunblock that you can easily reapply since you’ll need to do it every few hours during your trip.

Always check the weather forecast

Even though the weather in the Algarve is pretty consistent, it can take an unexpected turn (and catch us all off guard!).

Sunshine is never guaranteed, and when it rains it can pour. However, the weather forecast here is usually pretty accurate – so make sure you check it!

Stay hydrated

When hiking in the Algarve, always bring enough water. The air is generally pretty dry and you’ll feel it quickly if you don’t keep hydrated.
